Trial Chambers: Beat the Breeze, Loot the Vaults, Craft the Mace (1.21+)

Trial Chambers are the combat dungeons added in 1.21 (Tricky Trials) β€” copper-and-tuff rooms of Trial Spawners and key-locked Vaults buried in the deepslate. They're the only source of the Mace's Heavy Core and some of the best enchantments in the game. Here's how to find them, clear them, and walk out with the loot.

Trial Spawner Vault Breeze Clear the spawner to earn a Trial Key, then open Vaults for loot
Trial Chambers are procedural rooms built around a Trial Spawner (locked until cleared) and Vaults that open with keys β€” Breeze mobs are unique to this structure.

How to find Trial Chambers

  • Where they generate: the Overworld, underground in the deepslate layer, roughly Y -40 to Y -20 (the sweet spot is around Y -20). No biome requirement β€” they're fairly common, often closer than your nearest village. They never touch the surface.
  • Dig and open caves: carve a staircase down to ~Y -20 and widen cave systems. Chambers frequently connect to natural caves.
  • Spot the walls: tuff bricks, chiseled tuff, copper blocks, copper bulbs and copper grates never generate naturally on their own β€” that's a chamber wall.
  • Shortcut (Java): /locate structure minecraft:trial_chambers prints the nearest coordinates. (There's no cartographer map for these β€” exploration or the command only.)
  • Listen for the distinct trial-spawner hum as you mine nearby.

Trial Spawners & keys

A Trial Spawner activates when a player comes within ~14 blocks and emits waves of mobs from one of three categories β€” melee, small melee, or ranged β€” that's fixed for that chamber. Waves scale with how many players are nearby.

  • Clear the waves and the spawner ejects a Trial Key into the world. There's a 30-minute cooldown after a successful clear, then it resets and can be run again.
  • Don't break the spawner during the fight. In survival it drops nothing (Silk Touch doesn't help), and mining an active one ends the wave with no key.
  • Light up cleared rooms between cooldowns so normal hostile mobs don't spawn while you loot.

Trial Spawner mob types

Every spawner is locked to one of three categories β€” the mob pool is fixed for that chamber, and waves scale with nearby players:

Spawner typeExample mobsWhat to expect
MeleeZombie, Husk, Spider, Slime, Zombie PiglinFront-line attackers; ominous runs add armor and potions.
Small meleeCave Spider, Silverfish, Endermite, Baby Zombie, Chicken, RabbitFast swarms with small hitboxes; crowd control matters.
RangedSkeleton, Stray, Bogged, Piglin, WitchShoot from afar; shields and cover swing these fights.

Vaults & Ominous Vaults

A Vault is the copper-and-stone reward block. Insert a Trial Key and it pays out β€” one reward per player, ever (the block stays, so a group each loots their own). Regular vault loot leans toward enchanted books, diamonds, armor pieces, renamed tools, Breeze Rods, Wind Charges, and the Flow/Bolt armor trims.

An Ominous Vault opens only with an Ominous Trial Key and holds the best loot: the Heavy Core (the Mace ingredient you can't get anywhere else), top-tier enchantments (Wind Charge, Breach, Density), and exclusive trims.

The Breeze & Wind Charge

The Breeze is the signature hostile mob of some Trial Spawners. It drops 1–2 Breeze Rods (Looting raises the count) and is the reason you'll want a plan:

  • It leaps around its target and is immune to almost every projectile β€” except the Wind Charge.
  • It fires Wind Charge projectiles: small direct damage, plus a Wind Burst on impact that knocks you back hard.
  • Wind Bursts also flip doors, trapdoors and fence gates, press buttons and levers, ring bells, extinguish candles, and break decorated pots and chorus flowers.
  • The Wind Charge is also a usable dropped item (from breezes and ominous vaults) β€” a knockback weapon/utility you can fire yourself.
πŸ’‘ Fight the Breeze Bring a shield (its knockback is punishing) and a bow β€” breezes take ranged hits fine, so kite them from distance rather than trading melee.

Crafting the Mace

The Mace is crafted from a Breeze Rod + a Heavy Core. The Heavy Core comes only from Ominous Vaults (see below), so the Mace is gated behind an ominous run.

  • Smash attack: hit a mob while falling β€” the longer the fall, the bigger the damage. Knockback your foes.
  • Best enchantments (all from Ominous Vaults): Density (more fall damage), Breach (armor penetration), and Wind Burst (launches you skyward after a smash, letting you chain attacks).

Going Ominous

To reach the Ominous Vaults you need Ominous Trial Keys, and those only drop from ominous spawners:

  1. Get an Ominous Bottle β€” dropped by raid captains (outside) or looted from vaults inside.
  2. Drink it to gain Bad Omen. Entering a chamber converts it to Trial Omen: spawners turn ominous (harder mobs with armor and potions) and drop Ominous Trial Keys.
  3. Open Ominous Vaults for the Heavy Core and the best enchants.
  4. Cancel anytime by drinking milk, which reverts every spawner in the chamber to normal.
πŸ’‘ Run order Do a normal clear first to learn the layout and bank regular loot, then come back ominous for the Heavy Core. Ominous waves can corner you with a ravager plus skeletons β€” bring a friend or a stack of golden apples.

FAQ

Can I pick up a Trial Spawner?

No. In survival it drops nothing and can't be moved by pistons. It exists only where it generated.

Do I need cheats to find them?

No. They generate naturally; /locate is just a convenience.

Can a vault be re-looted?

No β€” one reward per player, ever. Group runs let each player open their own.

Why are the waves so big?

Trial Spawners scale to nearby players. Solo for easy runs; party up only when you're geared.
