How to Find Netherite Fast
Netherite is the end-game gear tier: stronger than diamond, knockback-resistant, and immune to lava. The bottleneck is finding ancient debris β here is the fastest repeatable method, and how to upgrade without losing your enchantments.
Why netherite is worth it
- Lava immunity: dropped netherite items float in lava and never burn.
- Knockback resistance: each armor piece adds knockback reduction β huge for PvP and fortress fights.
- More durability & damage: ~8% more durable than diamond, slightly faster mining and +1 attack damage on weapons.
Best Y level for ancient debris
Ancient debris generates in the Nether in tiny veins of 1β3 blocks, never exposed to air (Java). Distribution peaks hard in the low teens:
| Y level | Relative abundance |
|---|---|
| 8β12 | High |
| 13β17 (peak β Y 15) | Highest |
| 18β30 | Low |
| 31β119 | Very low / rare |
Mine at Y=15. Any diamond-or-better pickaxe works; the block itself has extreme blast resistance, so explosions reveal it without destroying it.
Bed mining (safely)
Beds explode when used in the Nether β a cheap, renewable TNT alternative. Done wrong it kills you; done right it clears huge volumes fast:
- At Y=15, dig a main tunnel, then side branches every 4 blocks.
- At the end of a branch, dig a small alcove and place a solid block between you and the bed.
- Place the bed, back off behind your block, and right-click it. The block absorbs the blast.
- Check the crater for ancient debris (it survives the explosion), then repeat down the branch.
TNT works the same way with less personal risk but real resource cost; efficiency-enchanted pickaxes plus a Haste beacon can also just chew through netherrack directly.
Smithing templates & upgrading
Since 1.20, upgrading diamond gear requires a Netherite Upgrade smithing template:
- Find templates in bastion remnant chests β the treasure-room chest always contains one.
- Duplicate them before spending: 1 template + 7 diamonds + 1 netherrack = 2 templates (crafting table).
- At a smithing table combine: template + diamond item + netherite ingot β netherite item. Enchantments, name and durability carry over.
Full-kit debris math
1 netherite ingot = 4 ancient debris (smelted into scraps) + 4 gold ingots.
| Goal | Ingots | Ancient debris | Gold ingots |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full armor set (4 pieces) | 4 | 16 | 16 |
| Sword + pickaxe | 2 | 8 | 8 |
| Armor + sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel | 8 | 32 | 32 |
Expect a focused hour of bed mining to yield roughly 8β15 debris, depending on luck and efficiency.
