Elytra: Get, Fly and Never Lose Your Wings in Minecraft 1.21
The elytra is the single best mobility item in the game — and the only one you can fly into the ground with. You can't craft it; you loot it from an End Ship after beating the dragon. The good news: elytra never permanently break. They stop working at 1 durability, so you can fly them to zero with no risk of losing the pair. Here's the whole loop: get them, fly them, repair them.
How to actually get elytra
- Beat the Ender Dragon. When it dies, an End Gateway portal opens at the edge of the main End island. Throw an Ender Pearl into it to teleport out to the outer End islands.
- Find an End City. The outer islands are a sprawl of floating chunks connected by bridges. Explore until you find an End City — and crucially, one with an End Ship floating beside it (not every city has one). On Java you can shortcut the search with
/locate structure minecraft:endcity. - Loot the ship's treasure room. The ship is a dark-purpur vessel. At the back is a small treasure room: a dragon head on the bow, a brewing stand, and the elytra hanging in an item frame on the wall. Break the frame to collect it.
- One ship = one pair. Every End Ship holds exactly one elytra. For a spare pair, find another ship at another city.
Equipping and the one rule
- Elytra occupy the chestplate slot. You cannot wear a chestplate at the same time — wings or armor, pick one (Mending + Unbreaking makes wings the better choice for travel).
- To open the wings: fall from a height and press jump (space) again mid-air. You must be falling first; you can't flap from flat ground without a rocket.
- Steer: look down to dive and build speed, look up to slow and climb slightly. Gentle low-angle approaches make for soft landings.
- The one rule: watch your durability bar, not the ground. At 1 durability the wings stop dead — an instant fall from wherever you were.
Flying: glide, dive, rocket boost
Elytra alone only glide — you trade height for distance. Sustained flight needs firework rockets.
- Boost: while gliding, use a firework rocket to accelerate in the direction you're facing (~33.5 blocks/sec during the boost). Three-gunpowder rockets are the travel standard — further per rocket.
- Take off from flat ground: aim slightly up, fire a rocket, and you're airborne without a cliff.
- Never put a firework star in a travel rocket. A starred rocket explodes at the end of its flight and damages you mid-air. Stars are for fireworks displays, not flying.
- Rocket use does not consume elytra durability — only gliding time does.
| Rocket | Flight duration | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gunpowder | Short | Quick hop / small boost |
| 2 gunpowder | Medium | General travel |
| 3 gunpowder | Long | Long-distance travel (standard) |
| + firework star | — | Displays only — do NOT fly with these |
Repairing: membranes vs Mending
Elytra have 432 durability and lose about 1 point per second of gliding — roughly 7 minutes 12 seconds of flight per full pair. When they hit 1 durability they adopt a tattered texture and stop working until repaired. They can never fully break, so a dead pair costs you nothing but a landing.
- Phantom Membrane (anvil): each membrane restores 108 durability (25%), so four membranes take a dead pair back to full. Membranes drop from phantoms, which spawn when you skip sleep — an insomnia farm supplies them passively.
- Mending (anvil book): repairs the wings automatically from XP orbs while equipped. This is the long-term answer for a pair you intend to keep — pair it with a steady XP source (see our Mob Farm Guide).
- Two elytra combine (anvil): adds both durabilities plus 21, but it wastes a second pair. Only do this if you have a spare.
Best enchantments
You cannot enchant elytra on an enchanting table — only on an anvil with enchanted books. The two that matter:
- Unbreaking III — stretches each durability point to ~4 seconds, pushing total flight to about 28 minutes 48 seconds per pair. Apply this first.
- Mending — repairs from XP you collect. With a reliable XP farm, a Mending pair effectively never needs an anvil again.
- Avoid Curse of Binding (can't un-equip) and Curse of Vanishing (lost on death) unless you have a specific reason.
How fast is elytra, really?
Raw ground travel can't compete once wings are involved. Approximate horizontal speeds in Java 1.21 (blocks per second):
| Method | ~Speed (blocks/s) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | ~4.3 | Baseline. |
| Sprinting | ~5.6 | With a full hunger bar. |
| Horse | ~9–14 | Varies by the individual horse. |
| Boat | ~8 (far faster on ice) | An ice highway dwarfs everything on land. |
| Minecart (powered rail) | up to ~8 | Capped but reliable. |
| Elytra glide | similar to walking | Trades altitude for distance, no rocket. |
| Elytra dive | up to ~65–80 | Steep dive before drag clamps it. |
| Elytra + rocket | ~33.5 sustained | A 3-gunpowder rocket is the travel standard. |
Travel tips & safety
- Overworld highways: fly at Y 180–250 along beacon columns; a shulker box of spare rockets covers thousands of blocks per trip.
- End island hopping: with Slow Falling and short rocket bursts, city-to-city hops take seconds instead of bridges.
- Don't fly low-durability over the void. Mid-air shutdown is survivable with a water bucket or blocks — fatal without them.
- Rain hurts visibility, not wings. If you must cross a storm, slow down.
- Slow Falling is your safety net. Quaff it before risky landings and a bad approach becomes a soft one.
FAQ
Can I get elytra on a brand-new world without the dragon?
No — on Java the outer End (and therefore End Cities/ships) is gated behind the dragon kill and the gateway portal. There is no overworld elytra source.
How many elytra does one ship give?
Exactly one pair in the item frame. Loot multiple ships across multiple cities for spares.
Do wings work in the Nether?
Yes, mechanics are identical, but low ceilings and fire make it hazardous. Most players carve a 2-high tunnel near the Nether ceiling instead of open flight.
What's the top speed?
A firework-boosted glide tops out near 33.5 blocks/sec; steep dives briefly exceed that before drag clamps it.
