Diamond Mining Guide (1.21+)
The 1.18 world generation overhaul moved diamonds to the bottom of the world β and the old βY=11β advice with them. Here is where diamonds actually spawn now, and the mining pattern that turns an hour underground into a stack of gems.
Best Y level
Diamond ore generates from Y=16 down to bedrock, getting more common the deeper you go. The practical optimum:
| Y level | Verdict |
|---|---|
| 0 to 16 | Thin β not worth targeting |
| -30 | Decent |
| -59 (feet level) | Best balance of density vs. bedrock/lava-floor interference |
| -60 to -64 | Highest density but bedrock and lava lakes constantly block tunnels |
One more post-1.18 quirk: diamond ore generates less often when exposed to air, so sealed deep-slate stone hides more ore than open cave walls. That is why systematic mining beats caving for most players.
The optimal branch mine
- Dig or staircase down to Y=-59 (press F3, check the βXYZβ line β your feet are the middle value).
- Dig a main tunnel, 2 blocks high, as long as you like.
- Every 2 blocks along the main tunnel, branch off a side tunnel (also 2 high). Two-block spacing means every ore vein is exposed while barely wasting pickaxe durability.
- Extend branches 30β50 blocks, then move the main tunnel forward.
Lava safety
Lava aquifers and lakes are common at these depths. The rules that keep you alive:
- Never mine the block directly under you, and listen for lava bubbling behind walls.
- When you break into a lava pocket, place blocks to wall it off before it flows into your tunnel β or dump your water bucket to turn it to obsidian.
- Water behaves oddly at low Y only in that you still canβt place it in the Nether β down here it works fine. Keep it on your hotbar at all times.
- Fire Resistance potions (see our brewing guide) turn lava from lethal to mildly inconvenient.
Fortune vs Silk Touch
| Fortune III | Silk Touch | |
|---|---|---|
| Diamonds per ore | ~2.2 average (up to 4) | 1 ore block |
| Best for | Every diamond, emerald, lapis, coal, redstone, copper and amethyst you mine | Ender chests, glass, bee nests, ore blocks for storage |
They are mutually exclusive, so carry two pickaxes. Always mine diamond ore with Fortune III β it more than doubles your yield. Full details in our Enchanting Guide.
Alternative diamond sources
- Deep-slate caving: exposed veins in huge caves can outpace branch mining with Elytra-grade gear β but βreduced air exposureβ means fewer veins than youβd hope, and mob risk is high.
- Buried treasure chests: guaranteed diamonds (1β2) β use a treasure map from shipwrecks.
- Structure loot: mineshaft, shipwreck, bastion, end city and desert temple chests all roll diamonds.
- Deepslate fossils: large fossils below Y=0 can generate with diamond ore blocks.
What an hour of branch mining actually yields
The βbest Y levelβ advice only matters once you can mine fast enough to expose enough stone. The real lever is throughput β how many deep-slate blocks you clear per hour β multiplied by Fortune. Tested survival runs at Y=-59 give these illustrative ranges:
| Setup | Blocks cleared / hr | Pickaxe | Est. diamonds / hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | ~4,000 | Stone pick, no Fortune | 8β14 |
| Optimized | ~6,000 | Efficiency V + Fortune III | 40β60 |
| Beacon-boosted | ~8,000 | Haste II + Efficiency V + Fortune III | 55β80 |
Diamond ore is rare β roughly 1 ore per ~120β180 deep-slate blocks at these depths β so the throughput multiplier is what separates a handful of gems from a stack. Fortune III alone roughly doubles the optimized row because each ore averages ~2.2 gems.
