Nether Portal Calculator

The Nether compresses travel 8× horizontally: one block walked in the Nether equals eight in the Overworld. Enter coordinates below to find exactly where to build the portal on the other side — no more linking to the wrong cave.

How portal linking works

  • The 1:8 rule: horizontal coordinates map as Overworld ÷ 8 = Nether. Y (vertical) is unchanged.
  • Portal search: when you step through, the game looks for an existing portal within 128 blocks horizontally (Nether scale) of the target spot — that's why two distant Overworld portals sometimes dump you in the same Nether room.
  • Build the destination first: for a reliable link, build and light the far-side portal at the calculated coordinates before you first travel. Then the link is guaranteed 1:1.
  • Y matters: keep Nether-side portals around Y 70–80 to land near the standard nether "highway" level, or well above ground with a platform if you're punching through a ceiling.
  • Clear the landing zone: if the target spot is inside a Nether fortress or lava ocean, build a small 5×5 cobble platform with rails of safety first — portal spawns respect a little clearance but lava finds a way.
💡 Fast-travel tip The most useful build in any world is a Nether hub: one central portal at 0,0 and spoke tunnels at Y=128 (the bedrock roof) or Y=71, each ending at a portal to your bases and farms. 10,000 blocks Overworld = 1,250 blocks of Nether sprint.

Worked example

Your base sits at X 8,000 / Z -4,000. The Nether portal belongs at X 1,000 / Z -500 — a 1,120-block trip instead of an 8,944-block Overworld slog. Fill the tunnel with packed ice and a boat and you're home in under a minute.
